Siloed
“Siloed” thoughtfully explores mothering and highlights invisible labor through the creation of photographic installations, durational performances and a community-driven photographic archive. We do not yet know the long term effects this pandemic has had on how mothers care for children while balancing wage labor, domestic duties and homeschooling under increasing uncertainty brought forth by the pandemic.
During the spring 2020 school term, I photographed three pencil shaving collections from my children titled "Merry-Go-Round, No. 1-3. These collections marked time and effort on both our parts. I've continued to collect these invisible gestures through photographing completed classwork, recording class conversations, and notating time and effort spent specific to homeschooling.
“Siloed” a 6 minute excerpt from a two hour performance, features a pencil sharpening and marking performance situated inside an old grain silo reinforcing our repetitive actions, monotonous routines and emphasizes our confined quarters throughout the pandemic. “Homeschooled” is an evolving large-scale photographic installation, created from the hundreds of images I took of my children learning at home and exposes the volume of work completed under my supervision throughout the pandemic. “The HomeSchooled Project” is an ongoing online collaboration with the community to collect, record and share our personal and universal experiences of homeschooling through a dedicated project website. Future plans include, a site-specific installation, programming and workshops.
